| Events We Attended in June and July, 2010
VBNF goes to places where good business opportunities and great networking there. Here is a list of functions we attended:
Indonesia Trade Mission in Vancouver

The event took place at the Sutton Hotel on Burrard. We welcome all the delegates from Indonesia and Ottawa and hope them come back soon. Indonesia is full of resources and good products with low labour costs. It will provide the environment for low cost production and low cost products for import. One of the products we like the most is the Cocoa product which is of high quality. If you are in the food business and want to import Cocoa beans or powder, we can help. Of course, they have many other products like seafood, snack and other food products as well as other industrial products. However, in the trade mission, they only show off their food industry. They do have wood and hi-tech products that we will be introducing later.
Please see photo video for the event.
Goodbye Mr. Haris and Hello Miss Kausar Kassim, VP of the Malaysian Tourism

VBNF was invited as VIP by the Gina Henson, President of the Malaysian Association of BC to this dinner party, saying goodbye to our dear friend Mr. Haris and welcoming to Kausar Kassim. I have to say Malaysia is one of the best countries in the Southeast Asia to visit. They have stable government and many tourist attractions at a good cost. I have yet to visit this place. Hopefully the next trip to Asia, I will stop by to do some business there. It is always a treat to attend their functions so I can say hello to some of my friends there altogether.
Please see photo video for the event.
BBQ Party by the MSBCA

MSBCA is also one of the network groups I have a strong connection with. Headed by Violet Chan, Michael Leong and Christopher Chung and others, they put up an excellent BBQ event for all family members to enjoy. You should have tried some of their Malaysian cooking. It is better than some of the restaurants I went to. Better yet, join them as a member and you can have the BBQ for FREE.
Please see photo video for the event.
ACCP Hiking Trip at Deep Cove

ACCP (Association of Chinese Canadian Professionals) organizes social events at least once a month. At my age, I took a chance to attend this event since I have not done this kind of exercise for a long time since I got back from Texas 6 years ago. Luckily, I made it to the top of the Rock. ACCP is a great association for the Chinese Professionals to join as they are very friendly and helpful to each other. They also do mentoring and social events to bring speakers to teach of their expertise. Check them out.

Realty News
Mortgage Rate: Variable vs Fixed, reported by Joey Cheung, VBNF
Don Campbell, the President of the Real Estate Investment Network and author of Real Estate Investing in Canada says that at the end of 2011, the prime rate will increase by 2.75%, which means variable rate mortgages will go up. He advises that home owners or potential home owners to stick to a variable rate mortgage because it has many benefits, which includes home owners getting $16,000 if they make the right choices.
There are many misconceptions about fixed and variable rate mortgages. Many new homebuyers choose a 5-year fixed rate mortgage because they feel that this choice is safer and is more stable, but they lack the knowledge of how the 2 different mortgages work.
Just because a variable rate mortgage increases does not mean that you’re losing money. Banks actually increase the discount if you choose to get a variable rate mortgage, so you’re essentially getting the same rate. And with the variable, you’re actually paying more principal in the end, and paying less compared to the fixed, which just seems like the better option even as the rates are going up.
A good strategy to take is to not lock in, but to just make the equivalent payment for the variable as you would the fixed because then you will save more by paying more quickly, and you can be more flexible with your payments as well. If in case you need some extra money to buy something for the holidays or take a vacation, then you’ll have the extra money to do that. If you choose to go with the fixed, then it means that you need to pay the bank more every month, and you’re just paying more than you need to.
This is a 5-year strategy. So by the end of 5 years, as the rate increases, you’re actually paying the same as the fixed mortgage but getting more flexibility, so it’s a win-win situation.
Variable vs. fixed rate - should you lock in? Don Campbell

Technology
|
Vancouver GreenTech Exchange, reported by Steven Vu, VBNF
Electric Bicycle
Ebikes have been around for a while, since the early 1900’s.
Ebikes have gained momentum in Asia and is slowly growing in Europe and USA. The main reason why people purchase Ebikes in Asia is because it is better then a bicycle and less expensive than an automobile.
Ebikes have still not gained much traction here in Canada and there are still many government regulations against it. For example you can not ride an Ebike on the bike lanes here, can not be faster then 35km/hr, and can not be taken on the sky-train.
Tips for surviving an IP (Intellectual property)
Why protect your IP?
- IP are scrutinized by public, investors and underwriters
- Blocks competition
- Protects your technology
- Can become a major asset ( the speakers personal opinion is that for tech start up’s the IP is your most important asset most likely )
- Great for investors and well managed IP’s can close deals
Tip #1: Your IP should be a part of your business plan, well written and easily understandable. He has done a lot of audits where the business plan is full of errors and does not mention the IP at all
IP audit steps:
- Proprietary tech check
- Patent portfolio inspection
- Patent claim skills
- Trade secret management
- Employment contracts – whether the business gains ownership of employee inventions
- Licensing agreements
- Freedom to use – whether the tech is violating any other patents, freedom from 3rd party violations
- Interviewing key personnel and management
- Inspecting facility
Technology assessment
- Is the proprietary Unique?
- Does it have commercial value?
- Evaluating the patent
Patent Portfolio assessment
- Which patentable tech are protected
- What geographical coverage does the patent have? ( how many countries )
- Does the inventor have ownership or the company?
Tip#2: Very often Sr. Management does not understand the scope of their patent protection during interviews
Tip#3: The employee contract should state clearly who owns inventions. In cases of contract work, it should be clearly stated that the invention ownership is assign to the business because there have been cases where the contacted employee keeps ownership and wins in legal battles.
Tip#4: Patents are very expensive so sometimes it is better to keep it as a trade secret which is a less expensive alternative
Tip#5: Get professional patent counseling
Licensing blocking
By patenting the development up to the final product you are at times able to stop your competitions because they can not re-engineer your product and use it.
Tip#6: Just because you were able to gain a patent approval it DOES NOT mean that you are free from any violations yourself.
TIP#7: pct-Reserves your right to patent your technology in 40+ countries, it is not too expensive and can be done fairly quickly. You can use this as an instrument to gain approval from investors, if no one wants to invest with your product then you stand to lose a lot less money then if you went ahead an did the patent in all those countries.

| For your Safety: Passed along by Police Department & Courthouse
Several things to be aware of this year...as gangs and robbers are now plotting different ways to get a person to "stop" their vehicle. Please send to your friends.
Please note:
1) There is a gang initiation reported by the local police department that gangs are placing a car seat by the road with a fake baby in it.... waiting for a woman, of course, to stop and check on the baby...
Note that the location of this car seat will usually be beside a wooded or grassy (field) area ...and the person - woman - will be dragged into the woods- beaten and raped- usually left for dead.
DO NOT STOP. DIAL 9-1-1 AND INFORM THEM.....
2) IF YOU ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT AND EGGS ARE THROWN AT YOUR WINDSHIELD. DO NOT OPERATE THE WIPER AND SPRAY ANY WATER BECAUSE EGGS MIXED WITH WATER BECOME MILKY AND BLOCK YOUR VISION UP TO 92.5% SO YOU ARE FORCED TO STOP BESIDE THE ROAD AND BECOME A VICTIM OF ROBBERS. THIS IS A NEW TECHNIQUE USED BY ROBBERS.
You heard something and want to share, contact us.

Future of the Regions - Sustainability Summary, reported by Steven Vu, VBNF
With Vancouver’s population expected to double in the future, making sure the city continues to be sustainable will be a challenge. VBNF attended the Vancouver dialogue on the future of sustainability for the region where a mix of politicians, businesses, experts and citizens gathered together to discuss the issues. These dialogues will be important in helping decision makers in keeping the city sustainable. This particular session explored Vancouver’s current state, as well as the local agriculture, and how it could become more sustainable.
The main topic for the day dealt with the challenges for local farmers in bringing their products to the market and how Vancouver needs a more efficient way for them to do so. Ideas brought forth to solve the problem would be to create a special farmers market similar to some of the very successful markets in other parts of Canada which could create an abundance of opportunities.
Other concerns highlighted during the discussion would be whether Vancouver would be able to sustain itself if something were to happen to the agriculture industry in California which is facing record droughts and irrigation restrictions.
Another interesting idea that was brought forth during the discussion was to provide healthy and nutritious snacks to school children and hospitals patients with all of it being produced by local farmers. This would help support our local farmers, improve the health of the community and make Vancouver more self sufficient.
The dialogue provided a wealth of information on the issue of sustainability for Vancouver and will continue to be needed in the future if the city is to remain sustainable with continued expectation of population growth and city expansion.

Health
You are stressed with loads of works, you did not sleep well, eat well and/or dispose your body waste well. You get tired easily, you don't have energy for anything and can't think straight. Well here are a few items that may help you.
STEM Cell Products
What are stem cells?
Stem cells can be thought of as “master” cells. You’ve probably heard about the controversy of embryonic stem cells in the news. Stem cells are found in human embryos, but are also found in adult tissue. Adult stem cells are most abundantly found in bone marrow. Stem cells circulate and function to replace dysfunctional cells, thus fulfilling the natural process of maintaining optimal health. StemEnhance supports the release of adult stem cells from bone marrow into circulation.
The recent advances in stem cell research were listed as one of the most significant health-related stories in the past 25 years by CNN, second only to the complete mapping of the human genome.
What are stem cell enhancers?
Recent scientific developments have revealed that stem cells derived from the bone marrow, travel throughout the body, and act to support optimal organ and tissue function. Stem cell enhancers are products that support the natural role of adult stem cells.
Why do I need this product?
As you age, the number and quality of stem cells that circulate in your body gradually decrease, leaving your body more susceptible to injury and other age-related health challenges.
Just as antioxidants are important to protect your cells from “free radical” damage, stem cell enhancers are equally important to support your stem cells in maintaining proper organ and tissue functioning in your body.
How does it work?
When you take two capsules, the ingredients help to support the release of stem cells from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Through a natural process, those stem cells then travel to areas of the body where they are most needed.
